Those Filipino farmers are fun

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

This’ll be short but brief.  I’ve annotated the pictures to help you out.  While on holiday, I had the opportunity to dine with two farmers (although they sometimes fish for their food too, as the 2nd photo attests).

Poor though they might be, they know how to make the best of what they have!  All in-all, it was an interesting short trip to one of the less dangerous islands in the philippine archepelago.

The area might look a little run down, but the woods just off from their little shack provides more than enough game and natural vegetation for their needs.

The dog meat was a little chewy, but strangely it somehow tasted fine with the plantain.

Perhaps I’ll get my cook to rustle something similar up back at home.  Although perhaps she would balk somewhat at the thought of roasting a whole dog on a spit.

It was a glorious afternoon on the beach.  One of the natives had to go and collect his catch as the tide was starting to come in.

The netting was made of coarse hemp and wire - they’d managed to salvage buoyancy aids from a shipwreck some months ago.  The jury-rigged tool worked remarkably well.

Well done farmers!  A+ for ingenuity and resourcefulness in this remote village habitat.

What a glorious place to live though.

Feet > Superman

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

Said out loud, that’s "Feet, greater than Superman".  If that still doesn’t make sense to you after you read the next paragraph, you’re obviously not as geeky as I am.  Or as cool.  Kewl.  Kool.  None of those!

I watched Superman last night, and it was pretty good (Orange 2 for 1 is great, but they’ve started charging 35p for the privilege and I don’t know if my limited budget can handle the additional cost.  Why don’t they just deduct  3 from my SMS quota for the month?  That way, I’d be left with only 988 to waste).

Back to my original derailed train of thought then - Superman was good but it definitely felt like a rehash of the S1 & 2 with Christopher Reeve being mimicked by Roth.  Bryan Singer does an admirable job in directing Superman, but ultimately it feels like I went to the cinema to watch something I’ve pretty much seen already.  There were only two occasions when I felt like cheering inanely.  The first being the appearance of ‘Cyclops’ (prompting me to mutter "Optic Blast!" in a terrible american accent), and the other was when the "Happy Feet" trailer was shown before the movie started.  Robin Williams is SO my hero, and he make a wicked mexican (spaniard?).  I envy anyone that knows him well :p

Still within films - I also saw Pirates of the Caribbean 2, and it was enjoyable - but I guess you can never really capture the magic of seeing Cap’n Jack Sparra’ step off his boat the very first time.

Onward to happier feet.

Ugh.

Summer is here in full force.  Ick.  Grim.  Yuk.  Gross.  Why is it then that I ended up in a tube with a load of sweaty, tired, irate people at 6pm on a Wednesday?  I blame Melvin.  Damnit, I’m not arranging anything with him again.  Evar!

So I get off the tube with like 50 people’s DNA on me (god knows how many people-flecks I breathed in - hope my immune system can cope), and end up at Zander’s place … only to find that now we’re heading back south again ><

And when I get back, I find that YET ANOTHER Nigerian bidder has screwed up the auction of my old phone on Ebay!  Stupid Nigerian scammers!  Stop that!  There’s even a NOTICE on my Ebay auction page that says I won’t send the phone anywhere else.  Grrr.

Plus points today?  A replacement fan for the one that blew up the other night :p

Too lethargic.  How do you commoners cope on public transport during rush hour ;) ?  Grim…
Really, they should pump deodorant through the ventilation system.  My sensibilities are offended.  Greatly.
